TSA/ESF Turtle Donations

Post by Maria » Fri Aug 13, 2010 10:20 pm

This has been brought to my attention so please, anyone who can help out, I'm sure they would greatly appreciate it!

As you know the The Hong Kong SAR government and Kadoorie Farm & Botanic Garden in Hong Kong regularly offer to donate confiscated turtles and tortoises to ESF.

In a few months, the following wild species: Geochelone elegans, Heosemys annandalii, Heosemys grandis, Indotestudo elongata, Mauremys annamensis, Mauremys japonica, Mauremys mutica, Mauremys (Chinemys) reevesii, Mauremys (Ocadia) sinensis, Siebenrockiella crassicollis will become available. The numbers of the species vary. If you are interested, please contact Harry Rotmans, secretary of ESF, at secretary@studbooks.org

When the ESF has enough people interested in providing homes for the animals, the TSA-Europe and the ESF can start all procedures for the permits and import at Schiphol Airport, Amsterdam, the Netherlands. Depending on the cooperation of the authorities in Hong Kong SAR and the Netherlands, the import is expected at the beginning of October of this year.

At this time, these animals still need to be placed with private keepers:

Heosemys annandalii 0.0.25
Heosemys grandis 9.2.9
Mauremys mutica 1.2.9
Mauremys (Chinemys) reevesii 1.1.2
Mauremys (Ocadia) sinensis 0.0.1
Indotestudo elongata 0.1.0
Siebenrockiella crassicollis 0.0.4

Interested parties have to contact ESF and describe what enclosures they can provide. They will have to come to the airport in person to sign the agreement and pick them up. The turtles remain property of ESF. Studbook participation is required.
0.1.0 Pseudemys concinna concinna
1.0.0 Trachemys scripta scripta
2.6.0 Malaclemys terrapin terrapin

There have been a couple of shipments from Kadoorie Farm in Hong Kong to the USA and Europe. I was involved in one of the events last year and travelled to Rotterdam to collect a group of animals that were being distributed to some UK collections. These included three private collections here in the UK and one Zoo.
To date, though one of the groups were relocated to another collection, all animals are in good health and hopefully forming a part of "assurance colonies" for at least three separate Asian Turtle species.
If you get a copy of the latest Practical Reptile Keeping Magazine, (August 2011), you will see a note from the editor advertising a couple of talks I am giving in July and August at the Living Rainforest in Hampstead Norreys, near Newbury in Berkshire. ~popcorn
