Tank extender / over tank basking area

Thought you might like to have a look at my latest tank modification.

This is constructed from 2mm acrylic sheet and 15mm plastic angle from Homebase. Black aquarium safe adhesive / sealant was used.

This now allows me to fill the tank to the recommended limit and still use my existing turtle island which floats and is roughly secured by magnets. The clamp lamps are secure but if I made another I would use 4mm acrylic to stiffen the sides a little. At the moment all sides are remaining clear to have less impact on the room. You can see my painted is happy with the situation.

The cutouts at the front of the photo are for the filter inlet / outlet at the rear of the tank.

Thanks all. Hope it provides food for thought.

I can't get any more water in the tank, building a platform above might give me (us) two more advantages.

1. More "land" area.
2. Less evaporation / heating of the water from the heat lamp.

I am sticking as is for now having also recently built a custom filter / power cupboard down the side :-)

A quick update.

I believe I suggested 4mm acrylic would be better for this design.

I have found some cracking of the 2mm acrylic under what might be a particularly strong clamp. So, I would suggest the thicker material at least where the clamps are used.

I do have some 4mm so will be patching the area at some point and see how it copes. I would rather do this than use packing materials to spread the load which will be tedious to remove / re-add and detract from the look.
