Neil,
The same has happened to me and the animal recovered. It was mid winter and it just looked like a lifeless floater. It recovered itself and has since been OK. I thought it was some animal specific illness, but in truth I have no real idea.

Yes, it will be just enough water to stop dehydration then a gurt wad of rotted leaves and bark sections so they have the option of hunkering down at any level they wish. Thery may hate it but Ill give it a try.

Ill be trying another strategy for hibernation this year by providing a very shallow (5mm) pond with loads of hidey holes and bark to see if they utilise that for the cold spell. The adhesive issue has been addressed with another brand now under long term outside testing.

Well I was showing folk around and when trying to catch the male up popped another baby in the duckweed!

I am sure that this is an option for the future.
